17 FEBRUARY 2020: CARACAS, VENEZUELA

Venezuela announced that it was suspending all TAP Air Portugal flights to and from the country for 90 days. Venezuela accused the airline of allowing the uncle of opposition leader, Juan Guaido, to carry explosives onto a flight to Caracas on 11 January. Guaido and his uncle were travelling back to Venezuela after his international tour to garner support for his being the legitimate president, and to denounce current president, Nicolas Maduro. TAP Air Portugal stated that it followed all legal and safety requirements of both countries and had the opportunity to counter the accusations. The Portuguese government has opened an investigation into the matter.
