Hamid Karzai International was closed and flights diverted as the military section of the airport was targeted by rocket fire. The Taliban and ISIS both claimed responsibility for the attack, however, the Taliban added that the attack had been targeting US Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who arrived at the airport some hours earlier. One civilian was killed in the blasts, in addition to the three assailants who were shot by security forces.
