28 SEPTEMBER 2018: PALU, INDONESIA

Anthonius Gunawan Agung, a 21-year-old air traffic controller at Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport, died during a magnitude 7.5 earthquake after saving the lives of hundreds of people by ensuring that the last plane took off safely. Once the Batik Air flight to Makassar was safely airborne, he jumped from a fourth-floor window as the tower began to collapse. He suffered serious leg and internal injuries and died in hospital the following day. The earthquake caused deep fissures to appear in the runway and (at the time of writing) claimed the lives of 1,649 people.
