Guilherme Alves De Melo, 33, a Brazilian national, pleaded guilty to intimidating crew members and interfering with their ability to perform their duties on 23 June. Alves De Melo caused a Canadian flight to Chicago to divert to Cedar Rapids when he became violent and displayed disturbing behaviour, frightening his fellow passengers and causing children to cry. Alves claimed he was suffering from a psychotic episode when he began punching himself, tearing up his identity documents and threatening crew.
